The American Black & Tan Coonhound

Large, athletic hunters who work at night, Black and Tan Coonhounds are friendly, easy-going dogs who love company. They are quiet in the house, but persistent when on the trail of the sly raccoon. The Black and Tan Coonhound is a true American original.

Black and Tans have an amazingly sensitive nose, long, velvety ears and an amiable nature. The coal-black coat features rich tan accents, including the distinctive “pumpkin seeds” above the expressive eyes. These are large, strong dogs: a male of good size can have 69 cm shoulder height. Black and Tan Coonhounds are sociable hunting dogs. A lone Black and Tan Coonhound will entertain the neighborhood with loud, sad “music”. Black and Tan Coonhounds can keep up with the most active family, but they can also hog the sofa for hours. Hunting dogs are still hunting dogs: a passing squirrel can awaken the Black and Tan Coonhound prey drive in an instant, so a strong leash and sturdy fence are a must.

Text from the AKC-Homepage

American Black and Tan Coonhounds are known for their ears, which are a striking size and length compared to other dog breeds.

One of the main functions of the American Black and Tan Coonhound’s long ears is to collect scents. The long ears help detect odors by directing the airflow around the dog’s head, trapping odor particles. The folds in the ears also help to concentrate and amplify odors.

Overall, the long ears of the American Black and Tan Coonhound are an important part of their physical characteristics and contribute to their ability to work as a hunting dog. However, it is also important to ensure that these dogs receive proper care to prevent infection and injury.
